2. How to Start

Just copy all the files to the directory containing FF5j.smc (must be named
that) and then run the FF5e.bat file that wil patch itself to the ROM and
create a new ROM called FF5e.smc. Below are other methods you can use for
applying the patch.

First, patch the *ORIGIONAL* ROM w/ either of the following commands:

Using IPS:

ips ff5.smc ff5e.ips

Using Ucon:

ucon i ff5.smc ff5e.ips

Now, load up FF5e in your favorite emu (the ones compatible w\ FF5e are
listed later on.. See Section 5) and you should see the title screen within
a few seconds. Press any button to go on. You're ready to start.

More detailed instructions for things such as copiers and variations on the
format of the FF5 ROM can be found at
http://www.netins.net/showcase/RPGe/

------------------------------------

L Button:\
          > Press & hold both to try to Run Away
R Button:/

------------------------------------
2b. The Menu Screen

The Menu Screen is the most important thing in FF5e.. You can use Items, Equip
stuff, see your Magic list, see your Status, and even Save your game. Later
on, you will be able to change your Jobs (classes) and stick Abils on your
characters.

------------------------------------
2c. Advanced Battle Tactics

1. Characters in the "back row" (BOTH allies and monsters) recieve 1/2 damage
from physical attacks (everything except magic). Also, their physical attacks
do 1/2 damage from the enemies. Place all magic users (White/Black Wizards)
in the back row, as their attacks don't do much damage anyway, and they have
poor defense.

2. Magic spells' attack power do not decrease if someone casts them from the
"back row". Just another reason to put Wizards in the back row.

3. If you target all the enemies with a magic spell, it'll do less damage than
if casted on only one enemy. The rate of decrease is affected by the number
of monsters targeted.

4. Target enemies' weaknesses. (i.e. use an Ice spell on a fiery creature,
use Lightning on anything that lives in water, and use Fire on any frozen
creatures). This will do more damage on them than usual.

5. Curative-type spells do good damage on Undead creatures (zombies,
skeletons, ghosts, etc.)

6. Take some time in leveling up just before you enter a new area. It'll be
   worth it!

------------------------------------

2d. Abnormal "Conditions":

In battle & Out of battle:

- "Stone" You are turned into a statue. Cannot fight in this condition.
  To reverse, use "Soft".

- "Toad" You've become a frog! Attack Pwr = 1, Def Pwr = 1, can't use any
spells.. Use a "Kiss" or "Toad" spell on him/her QUICK!!

- "Small" You're only a couple of inches tall, Atk Pwr = 1, Def Pwr = 1,
but can still use spells.. Use "Size" magic or snooze at an Inn to regrow
  to normal size.

- "Poison" Your face becomes purple, each step you take does damage to you,
and you will gradually lose HP. Use the item or spell "Antidote" to heal
  you.

- "Swooned" You're basically flat on your face unconscious as a result of a
lack of health. If all 4 party members are Swooned, you lose the game! Use
a Fenix Down or the "Life" spell to regain consciousness.

- "Blind" You can't see very well, and most of your attacks miss. Use an
  "Eyedrop" to see again.

Only in battle:

- "Old" You instantly become an old man. Your stats decrease slowly. Eventually
you will wither away and die.. Does not stay with you after battle, so either
finish the enemies off or RUN AWAY QUICK!!

- "Condemned" Those little numbers above your head are a countdown to doom! If
you don't finish the battle soon, the Reaper will come and take your life!
Whatever you do, DO IT QUICKLY!!

- "Slow" The time it takes him/her to prepare for battle is very long. You're
just going to have to wait it out on him/her.

- "Sleep" He/she is asleep. Either wait it out or have a really weak character
  attack him/her.

- "Muddled" One of your allies starts attacking you! Any physical attack will
  bring him/her back to sense.

- "Stop" You can't move. You'll just have to wait it out.

Good conditions to be in:

- "Fast" You prepare for battle very quickly. You attack very quickly.

- "Safe" Physical attacks do much less damage to you.

- "Shell" Magic does much less damage to you.

- "Reflect" All "single target" magic bounces off you and returns back to the
enemy party. This does not work with "all-party" attacks ("Meteor", "Quake",
  etc.)

- "Regen" Basically the reverse of poison.. Gradually gain HP during battle.

- "Float" The "Quake" spell does no damage to you and you can walk safely over
"damage" squares (ones that harm you when you walk on them).
---------------------------------

2e. Jobs/Classes in FF5e

There are 21 different classes in FF5e. Here is a brief description of each:

- Knight

Has very high Attack and Defense ratings. Can equip all swords.. Even Katanas!

- Karate Master

Does 2-fisted attacks. Has the "Kick" ability whick kicks all enemies for
1/2 damage. Later, can store up power for a powerful attack and can heal
  himself.

- Thief

Can see hidden passages (which usually lead to shortcuts or treasure). His
"Sprint" ability is useful in situations where time is of the essence. As
he gains experience, he can "Flee" from enemies (which has a high run % rate)
and "Capture" enemies (attack & steal in same turn!)

- Dragoon

Has the extremely useful "Jump" attack which could save your life. He is
counted "out of battle range" while in midair, so if a boss uses some powerful
magic attack on your party, everyone else is hit, but the Dragoon escapes
  without a scratch!

- Ninja

Can equip weapons on both hands, and can "throw" ninja stars/shurikens/etc.
The "weapons on both hands" ability is quite useful to put on another class,
so it might be useful to stick with this one awhile and master it.

- Samurai

Has the ability of the extremely powerful and expensive "GP Toss". This
attack is quite costly, however, but it hits within the range of 1000-2000
  when you first get it!!

- Berserker

This class has the strange ability of "always berserk", which hits enemies
for twice the damage, but he automatically attacks each round and there's
nothing you can do about it! Special Abilities on the Command Menu are wasted
  on him.

- Magical Knight

This class has just under the attack power of a regular Knight, but has the
ability to cast magic on his sword, for a powerful sword attack! Useful
  against elemental-type bosses.

- White Wizard

Wherever you are in the game, a White Wizard will be extremely useful. His
Healing Magic can mean the difference between life and death in this game.

- Black Wizard

Very useful. His Black Magic has devestating effects on enemies. You should
have at least 1 around when you try to fight an elemental boss.

- Time/Space Wizard

  Can use "Time/Space Magic" (Fast/Slow/Stop/Meteor/etc.).

- Summoner

Uses "Summon magic" (call magic). Can summon monsters to unleash powerful
attacks. But these use up quite a bit of MP, so have plenty of Ethers around.

- Blue Wizard

Can learn "Lore" (Blue Magic) spells from enemies, but only if he is hit by
one first. Most have useful effects, so it's good to have someone who is a
Blue Mage or someone who has "Learn" as an ability.

- Red Wizard

Sorta like a Knight, White Wizard, and Black Wizard rolled up into one class.
Unfortunately, he can only use the first 9 white/black spells, so he's only
useful for a short time. Until then, replace all of your current White/Black
Wizards with this class! As he gains experience, he can later be able to
cast 2 spells in one turn.

- Beast Master

His strengths circle around controlling monsters and using them to the party's
benefit. He can capture monsters to release later & attack, and control
monsters so they either attack themselves or use a rarely-used Lore on a
  Blue Mage!

- Chemist

Can mix certain things to produce items that do different things to enemies.

- Elemental Mage

I'm not sure as of yet what he does.. In a later version I'll notify you!

- Bard

Don't think of him as weak (unlike Edward of FF2e). He is actually useful,
once he learns some songs to sing.

- Dancer

Can dance to produce various effects on enemies (similar to Mog of FF3e).

- Traveler

One might think that this is a weak class with no abilities at the beginning
of the game, but his real strengths come at the end of the game. He
automatically has all abilities equipped from mastered classes!

- Mimicer

No, you're gonna have to find this one on your own! He can "mimic"
(duplicate) the last player's move. A little tip when fighting the boss
protecting this class: Beat him at his own game.

3. The Story of FF5

The world is in perfect harmony. Suddenly, the wind stops.. The king of
Tycoon Castle (obviously a rich nation) starts to head out to the Wind Shrine
to see what's happened. But Lenna, the King's only (?) daughter, doesn't want
him to leave. The King discusses the problem with the wind stopping and
everything.. Then he gets on his Flying Dragon and takes off.

Meanwhile, Faris, the Head of the Pirates, is heading back to his (her?) cave.
But on the way, as Faris looks out to the sea, he notices the wind stopping.

As this is happening, Galuf, and old man, notices the wind stopping and pilots
the meteor he is riding in to earth. It crashes, making a great earthquake.

As the King of Tycoon reaches the Wind Shrine, he opens the door to find..
The Wind Crystal has shattered! Lenna gets worried about her father not
returning..

After this, Butz (the Big Hero of all this) is suddenly awakened by the meteor
crash. He gets on his personal chocobo, Boko, and rides off to the meteor.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Walkthrough

---------------------------------
4a. "Why'd the wind stop?"

After the long intro, you will notice to the northeast of you, there is a
meteor fallen into the ground. That's where you need to go.

---------------------------------
4b. The Meteor Crash Site

When you arrive, Butz will get off Boko and tells him to stay. Move Butz
through the path and there you will find.. Lenna's been captured by Goblins!
You must now fight them off. You have no special skills yet, just Fight them,
one by one. Soon you will defeat them, and you will free Lenna. They have a
little chat, and you must name Butz. (Go ahead and stay with Butz, or name him
something else.) Then, when you finish talking, go northeast and talk to Galuf,
who has lost consciousness. He will say he has amnesia, but can remember his
name. Then Lenna and Galuf leave together. Go down and right, and open the
treasure box. There you will find a Fenix Down, which restores life. Then go
back, get back on Boko, and leave.

-----------------------------------
4c. Onward to the Northwest

Head back south, then head all the way left then up. You will enter a sequence
where a giant earthquake strikes, and Butz is lucky enough to avoid a big
pitfall! After their little conversation, head straight up to leap over
pitfalls and fight.. More goblins! Fight them off as usual. Then keep going
up. Soon you will find Lenna and Galuf, who are unconsious, and all 3 ride
off through the trench.

-----------------------------------
4d. The Cave of Pirates

Keep going up and enter the little cave you find. They will have a little
conversation, and then go into the cave. Heal up Butz, as he probably
sustained quite a bit of damage from those goblins, so give him a potion.
Then be prepared to fight several enemies. A few rules of thumb:

1. Take out the Steel Bats quickly, or else, they can do Blood Suck and ruin
your day.

2. The Crabs are tough enemies, as Galuf does no damage whatsoever and Lenna
barely does any. Have Butz take them out quickly.

3. The Cave is long, so don't be afraid to use a couple of potions.

Soon, you'll reach the end. There are pirates everywhere, so don't talk to any
of them. Go and board the ship. Go to the top of it, and "talk" to the
steering wheel. Faris catches you by surprise and imprisons you. Soon, when
you are about to walk the plank, you break free, and Lenna explains their
current situation. Faris then decides to join you. Then, you are given the
option of going to the Wind Shrine or not. Say "Yes" if you don't know where
it is, or say "No" if you do. If you said "Yes", skip the next section and go
to 4f. Otherwise, read on.

-------------------------------------
4e. Ships Ahoy!

Head northwest to the town of Tule. If you can, buy Long Swords and Leather
Hats for everyone. If not, buy what you can. Then head for the Wind Shrine
(to the northeast).

-------------------------------------
4f. The Wind Shrine

As you enter, head left. Someone will tell you that monsters have invaded.
(Oh no!) Then head right, and up the stairs. Manuver your way through,
(battling Snake Bats, Grey Goblins, Jokers, and Nagas on the way). On the
3rd floor, you must battle the Wing Raptor. Attack normally, but DON'T
ATTACK WHEN HIS WINGS ARE CLOSED!! (or you'll be sorry!) Then keep heading
up. At the top, you'll find the shattered Wind Crystal and.. Lenna's father!
He is about to pass away, and Lenna has a conversation with him. Then the
crystal pieces collect around you, and you get 6 new classes: Knight, Karate
Master, Thief, Blue Wizard, White Wizard, and Black Wizard.

By the way, you can get random Elixirs by battling the enemies here!

-------------------------------------
4g. Get A Job!

When choosing your new classes, remember these strengths and weaknesses:

Knight - Has VERY high Attack and Defense. Will also "cover" allies if on the
brink of death. Can equip all swords. Even Katanas!

Karate Master- Attacks w\ both hands (similar to Galuf's attack). Will
also counterattack randomly if attacked. Can also "kick" enemies
for 1/2 the damage of a normal attack. But he has virtually no
Magic Power, so sticking any Magic on him as an Ability is not
a good idea. As he gains experience, he can also store power
for a super-strong attack, and can even heal himself!

Thief - Can sprint in towns and can see hidden passages. Invaluable in
situations where time is of the essence. Can "Steal" valuables from
enemies. Also, has a very good chance of running away (with "Flee"..
        learned as you gain experience)

White Wizard - A *MUST* if you expect to survive. His Healing Magic is
               indispensable.

Black Wizard - His Black Magic has devastating effects on enemies if used
               correctly.

Blue Wizard - Can learn cool "Lore" spells from enemies (but only if hit by
them). Can learn stuff such as "Goblin Punch", "Blood Suck",
and others! As he gains experience, he can see enemies' HP and/
              or weaknesses.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. Which Emu's/Copiers do FF5e work on?

A current listing of emu's/copiers and their compatibility as of June 19, 1997:

Emulators:

1. Snes97 V. 0.035: Plays FF5e perfectly except for incorrect BG overlapping.

2. Esnes v. 0.12b: Same as Snes97 but a little slower.

3. Snes9X v. 0.11: Mode7 title screen invisible, but pretty fast! Has sound!

4. Snes Prof v. 0.08b: Same as Snes96 and a little slower than Esnes.
                       *DISCONTINUED*

5. SPW v. 1.3a: Shows the title screen, but then freezes over.

6. SPW v. 1.7a: Non-playable

7. VSMC v. 9702d: Despite the note on the homepage, it is non-playable.

8. VSWC v. 0.1b DOS/ v. 0.8b Mac: Non-Playable *DISCONTINUED*

9. NLKSNES v. 0.013d: Not Playable (yet!)

Copiers:

Most all copiers are compatible with FF5e, but some (e.g. Professor SF2,
Game Doctor series) will need a conversion in Ucon or Snestool to get the ROM
into the format that they use. For more information, see
http://www.netins.net/showcase/RPGe/

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. Problems with Emu's

- All Emu's have horrible BG overlapping, making some of the Menu Screen
invisible. Press 3 (Snes96/Snes97) or F3 (Esnes) to see it.

- On most emu's, most of the cool Mode7 effects are missing. This is due
to the lack of docs on this subject. Could be remedied soon.

- No sound yet (for a DOS/Win95 emu - Snes96 Linux has PARTIAL sound) but could
be fixed with a later version of an emu.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. Problems w/ Translation:

- Need the *REAL* names of monsters!

- Space is a BIG problem with ROM hacking.. We have to shorten a lot of things
to make them fit. If we had our way, we wouldn't shorten things now, would we?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

8. Special Thanks to Those who Made This Possible:
